Doc-in-a-Box Retail Medical Clinics Booming with Growth in Senior Citizen Patients
This article describes the reasons why clinics are experiencing a surge in business across most categories and with most groups of people. Acute care is the only category that saw a reduction in numbers between the years of 2007 to 2009. Seniors, among other clinic users, utilize this type of service predominantly for preventative care (flu shots and the like). Other advantages that clinics offer over traditional medical appointments and visits are:
- Convenience-no appointment needed and clinic staff are available when most doctors are not.
- Faster service
- Prices for services are clearly posted and the same for everyone
- Up to 60% of people do not have a primary care physician-clinics fill in the gaps
The only draw back that clinics seem to have is in their perception by traditional physicians. Some doctors worry that clinic visits disrupt the primary care physician/patient relationship. They also express concerns about the “continuity of care” with people who have chronic conditions- which is an area clinics are looking to expand into.
