Students May Not Grasp Seriousness of Bomb, Gun Hoaxes, Officials Say

Several teens have been arrested and are facing charges in Kentucky and Indiana for making threats or spreading rumors via social media about bringing guns to school, bomb threats, or threats of other violence. In addition to some students facing legal action from state law enforcement, schools are also taking disciplinary actions. Accountability for actual threats and for rumors that others have started is being sought in light of the shootings that took place in Newtown, CT.

Ensuring kids’ safety is the number one concern everywhere. A threat is a threat now, regardless of its mode of delivery. Electronic messages deprive us of knowing if something is a joke or a real threat. Every potential threat has to be dealt with accordingly-often accruing great time, money, and resource loss in the name of maintaining public safety.
