My Insights into Stroke Prevention

This article is by Richard W. Besdine, MD who talks about the stroke experience of a neuro-anatomist named Jill Bolte Taylor. While most people who have had a stroke would certainly describe it as life-altering, few would see it as a creative journey into the workings of the brain as Dr. Taylor did. Dr. Besdine’s intent with this article was to outline healthy habits one can acquire to help avoid having a stroke. Surviving and recovering from a stroke can be very difficult, so preventing strokes all together should be a concern of everyone. Dr. Besdine’s stroke prevention suggestions:

  • For preexisting conditions such as diabetes, congestive heart failure, and atrial fibrillation, make sure you are being treated for these conditions if you have them. Make sure you stick to the medication regimen.
  • Control blood pressure, especially hypertension (high blood pressure)
  • Get cholesterol at proper levels
  • If you smoke, quit!
  • Alcohol use should be minimal
  • Exercise
